I recently came across a wonderful book - "Tricks of the Trade" by Past Hastings that is packed with great information for novice as well as veteran dogs owners. While the information was put together from years of judging, raising litters of puppies, training and showing it is extremely vaulable to the everyday dog owner. If you are planing and showing or breeding dogs I would definitely recommend that you read this book.

In addition, it is chock full of little tips such as a homemade formula to to remove outdoor odor build up, remedies for dogs with excessive gas, healings agents, etc. Below is the reciepe for Out order remover. I've tried this and it works pretty good. I even sprayed it on grass and plants with no problems:

Mix 1 quart water with 1 Cup Lemon0scented dish soap, 1 cup Lemon-scented Ammonia and 1 capful mint-flavored mouthwash. Pour mixture into a garden sprayer and spray away. It's vry sudsy but don't rinse. The mixture is totally safe to dogs and other species but will kill  bugs.

The EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) Research Fund has been established to help fund research [at Texas A&M Univeristy] aimed at identifying the EPI genetic marker(s) in dogs and developing a screening test. Such a test would help breeders identify carrier animals, so that responsible breeding decisions can be made. Please help raise money for *EPI RESEARCH* just by searching the Internet with GoodSearch.

Summer Pet Care Tips

Many regions have been hit with sweltering temperatures this summer. Please remember to keep your pets cool & hydrated - they can suffer from heat stroke just like people can!

Never leave pets alone in the car, even for short periods of time. Temperatures can reach deadly levels within just a few minutes even if the windows are cracked open.

Carry cool water with you and regularly offer it to your pet. You can try freezing a container of water to bring with you. As the ice melts it will provide drinking water yet still stay cool.

Choose early mornings or late evenings for outdoor excursions with your pet. It's cooler at these times of the day.

Be aware that hot sand or hot asphalt can burn your pet's paws. Choose cooler, grassy areas instead.

Make sure your pet always has access to shade and plenty of drinking water. You can "make your own shade" with an umbrella or with a tarp.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BOARDING FACILITY

Although many people travel with their pets, there are times when it may not be possible or appropriate to take your pets with you. Some people leave their pets with friends and family, however, not everyone has the experience or the time to properly care for a pet.

A good boarding facility can provide ...(Click here to read the rest of the article)

Mystery King
King Shepherd Health

Every breed, including the King Shepherd has certain inherent health issues that need to be monitored by responsible breeders and organizations.

Being a large breed, our primary focus of concern had been hips.  The preferred method of hip testing is PennHip with OFA being secondary.

Recently, EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) has reared its ugly head in some King Shepherd lines.  So far six cases have been documented in the last 8 months.  These are reported cases, and may only be the tip of the iceberg as far as KS health problems go.  Until diagnosed the EPI dog is starving to death because their pancreas atrophies to 10% of it's original size and loses the ability to produce digestive enzymes that are vital for survival.

Research has shown that you need 2 carriers or dogs (sire/dam) with EPI to produce an EPI dog.  On average with parents that are carriers, 25% of the litter will be carriers and 25% will eventually be diagnosed with EPI.  Texas A&M is working on finding a marker in German Shepherds.  Once successful they will be able to identify the markers in other breeds.

Dogs who are part of the EPI lines need to have a cTLI test.  The important thing to remember is that EPI can show up at any time.  Doing one EPI test does not mean that your dog will never have EPI.  Case in Point:  Our Gabrielle was tested in September of 2007 (because her littermate was diagnosed) and her level was normal.  When she became symptomatic she was tested in April of 2008 and her level has <.1 and diagnosed with EPI.

There have been a small amount of eye issues and heart disease found over the 12 years the King Shepherd has been in existence in its current incarnation as well as some cases of Mega E, Monochrodism, Shyness/Aggression, Hyperthyroidism, etc.

The best way to monitor all King Shepherd health issues is through a database and to help reduce these dieses in future generations of Kings.  The KSCI is thrilled to announce the creation of an interactive health database.  We need "YOU" to help us fill in the blanks with health information specific to your dog(s), be it good or bad.

Due to a dedicated group of concerned people, the KSCI has created an online health survey/database that will give all of us the ability to track the health of the King Shepherd. This survey is available to all to enter information including those with related breeds such as the Shiloh and GSD. Because this information is vital to all information will be shared in upcoming reports. We would also like all to promote this site on their website or share the link in emails to everyone you know that has any of these breeds.

In closing, I ask you to please participate in the survey.  The KSCI is about your King Shepherd and you.  The more  information we have the better choices we can make for the future of the King Shepherd.
