Food and Allergies
Is your canine friend itchy, but you can’t figure out why? You’ve ruled out fleas and other topical irritants like floor cleaners and plain old dry weather. Before you head off to the vet again, for costly antibiotics or steroid injections, check out what’s in his food. People aren’t the only mammals that have allergies. Dogs are affected, too, and after fleas, food is one of the most common sources. And sadly, it’s often the most overlooked. (read more)
Fund Raising
by Kathy Smith
Hello everyone
Kari has been so kind as to introduce us to the world of online storybooks. This sounds like a great idea and I don’t know about you but I am looking forward to starting one. (Note from Marla: I've recently seen one of these books and they are very nice and professionally done. I'm considered doing one of my pottery work as coffee table book).
Obviously, these photo books are wonderful ways to capture our families, traditions, vacations, etc. too. But we all love our KS's and what better way to show them off than in a professionally bound book! If your into breeding now, have one to pormote dogs and other championship KS's. It would be a great way to teach and showcase our breed... and the perfect gift to send along with new puppy buyers! Click here to learn more about the books and how your purchase will support the KSCI. A quick reminder that KSCI items make a great Christmas gift for almost everyone on your list and it supports our club. So check out our site at: http://www.cafepress.com/kingshepherd
Thank you for your support.
All proceeds from fundraising events/items go directly back to the running of the KSCI.

Recipe
Liver Brownies
1 lb chicken livers
3 whole eggs (shells & all)
1 T olive oil (or fish oil)
1/2 lb ground turkey (or lean beef or pork)
1 packet unflavored gelatin (to keep
shape)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 9x9 pan
really well. In blender, puree all
ingredients except turkey. Mix with ground
meat and pour into pan.
Bake for about 30 minutes, until cooked
through. Allow to cool and then put whole
pan in fridge or freezer before cutting into
small treats. A little goes a long way, as
they are quite rich. These do best kept in
the freezer.
You can also add a cup of greens or a
drained can of green beans to the blender
mix. If you want to add 1/2 a cup of
oatmeal, that works ok, too, if you're not
avoiding grains. If you use the oatmeal,
you can omit the gelatin. Avoid wheat
flour or cornmeal, as these can be a
cause of allergies and gas in the dogs.
If you add the veggies or oatmeal, you
may need to use a 9x13 pan instead. If
you use fish oil, your kitchen might not
smell so good for a bit!
If your King is finicky, these work great
crumbled over his or her usual meal as an appetite booster.
Please, if there is something missing that you feel is important, let the newsletter design team know. We are always looking for new ideas and volunteers to help.

Winter Care for Canines
From AKC Website
Winter's cold air brings many concerns for
responsible dog owners. Keep the following
precautions in mind:
Don't leave your dog outside in the cold for long periods of time. Wind chill makes days colder than actual temperature readings. Be attentive to your dog's body temperature, and limit its time outdoors.
Be extra careful when walking or playing with
your dog near frozen lakes, rivers or ponds. Your dog could slip or jump in and get seriously
injured.
Groom your dog regularly. Your dog needs a
well-groomed coat to keep properly insulated.
Long-haired dogs should have excess hair
around the toes and foot pads trimmed to ease
snow removal and cleaning.
Don't leave your dog alone in a car. If the car
engine is left on, the carbon monoxide will
endanger your dog's life. If the engine is off, the
temperature in the car will get too cold.
Be very careful of supplemental heat sources.
Fireplaces and portable heaters can severely
burn your dog. Make sure all fireplaces have
screens, and keep portable heaters out of reach.
Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are pet
poisons! Make sure they are kept in places your
dog cannot reach.
Tinsel is dangerous for dogs. It may obstruct
circulation and, if swallowed, block the intestines.
Alcohol and chocolate are toxic for dogs, even in small amounts. Keep unhealthy, sweet treats
and seasonal goodies out of reach.

From the President
by Peter Dobrzynski
Direction: The line or course along which a person, persons or things move. That’s how the dictionary defines it, but we’ll be defining it a bit differently as it pertains to the KSCI. It’s not a course we can set with a compass, or the stars, or the sun, but only with our heads and hearts. Recent revelations about the origins and, until recently, the stewardship of the breed, indicate that the founders have been asleep at the wheel, not only guided by, but a slave to profits above ethics. The course of the King Shepherd breed seems to have woven a rather erratic and questionable trail through its 12 plus or minus years of existence in its current incarnation. Many of us were led to believe by supposed people "in the know”that we were doing all within our power to ensure what was best in our breeding programs. Some, still in
denial or without souls, continue to pursue this venue rather than admit to their errors or outright deception.
No more! The KSCI will have one guiding principle as we set course for the future. We need only ask the questions “Is this decision for the betterment of the breed? Are we doing all we can to ensure the health and well-being of our dogs, while improving the physical characteristics and traits at the same time?” If we can answer these questions in the affirmative, then we know our course is true.
While financial sustainability is important, it should not come at the expense of the King Shepherd.
We have begun a program by which we will attempt to establish with all possible accuracy the ancestry of all breeding pairs. In some cases this will prove difficult to impossible due to factors that are not within our control, but nevertheless we will strive to recreate and substantiate the records where possible, and diligently maintain our records going forward. This will not prove to be an easy or expeditious task, yet it is one we must undertake to guarantee the future of the breed. We will be asking the cooperation of King Shepherd owners as we gather data in an effort to correctly identify lineage for our breeding program. Toward that end, we will be releasing a living survey to help us understand and identify existing
and potential health problems in the King Shepherd. We ask all King owners to complete the survey, if there are NO health issues, that is important for us to know also. If you are concerned with issues of confidentiality, please contact the KSCI so we might help address these individual situations.
